October 2017 LWVIA Issues Briefing

The October 14 morning session started with Rep. Mark Smith, Iowa House Minority Leader, welcoming LWV members to Marshalltown and sharing his thoughts regarding the coming session. Lobbyist Amy Campbell reviewed the draft 2018 LWVIA Legislative Priorities.  Additionally, Dawn Williams, Director or Elections with the Secretary of State's Office, shared the steps of the coming implementation of the Voter Integrity Bill passed last session.

The Afternoon session started with a video conference with Representative Andy McKean, Vice-Chair of the House Environmental Committee who shared his thoughts regarding the bottle bill.  League members appreciated that he supports expansion of Iowa’s bottle bill to include water, juice, and sports’ beverages. The panel discussion on the bottle bill involved three presenters: Matthew McKinney, lawyer with Brown Winick Law Firm who shared Selzer Polling information on the bottle bill; Troy Willard, owner of The Can Shed and speaking on behalf of Iowa Recycling Association; and David Jones, mayor of Atlantic and former owner of MCF Redemption.

Draft 2018 Legislative Priorities reviewed by Campbell at the Issues Briefing will be finalized at the LWVIA Board meeting in November.
